Anyone who does not have PowerPoint or KeyNote should check out OpenOffice.org, which has an equivalent program called OpenOffice.org Impress. I used Impress and Camtasia to create several YouTube-hosted videos more than a year ago about the value of walking 10,000 steps a day. As Greg points out, you could use Jing instead.

Great comment Kirk – and as I mention in the video, I use Camtasia for most of my videos because it’s a lot more flexible and powerful. Of course, there’s a cost to it as well but if you’re just starting out, then Jing is a great way to get started. And, using open source presentation programs like Impress is a great idea – so there really is NO excuse to not being able to get started, even if you don’t have Powerpoint or Keynote.

Ahh….. Steve, you’ve asked one of the most important questions — because it leads to a shift in mindset that you need to have before you can build this kind of business. “Who is going to pay money for this product when they can get it in so many places for free?” GREAT question. Here’s the thing — virtually ANY information you want is available for free on the net. You can get almost ANY information you want .. PROVIDED you’re willing to search, dig and filter for it long enough. There are entire ‘information marketing’ programs and articles that you can hunt for. But that’s the problem – the internet has SO much information, people are overwhelmed. They don’t WANT to spend all that time looking. And, they don’t know WHO to trust. So, if you can present the information in a convenient, concise package that gives them what they need, AND they trust you as a credible source, they’re willing to pay for it. And that’s why I think The Authority Formula is so powerful.. it’s all about showing someone how to quickly become an authority so that people are willing to trust and believe what they say, and that they’re the right source of the information. So while it might not make sense that pay are willing to pay for what’s out there for free, this is a billion dollar industry, which proves people are willing to pay for information. And in fact, because the information overwhelm is getting worse, what you can charge is actually RISING very quickly.

Hi Kim – yes, there are a lot of ways to shoot live video very inexpensively. A couple of ways are if you have an iPhone 4.. the video quality is shockingly good. You can also get an external mic adaptor that allows you to plug a mic in to get professional quality sound. If you’re not an iPhone 4 owner, then a great, cost-effective solution is the Kodak Zi8. It’s less than $200, and shoots high definition video at very high quality. It has an external mic on it so you can plug a mic into it that clips onto your shirt or jacket, which again gives you far better quality. I’m likely going to show a couple of quick examples in an upcoming video. So the point is, you can have professional looking live video capability for about $200, and then there are pieces of software that will allow you to edit for free as well.

Thanks for the great video…makes it very simple. Another “affordable” video camera solution is The Flip, which is very easy to use. In addition, we just bought a Mac and the IMovie software makes “movie-making” quite easy as well.

The Flip is a great camera solution too that’s cheap, but they made a killer mistake – designing it without an external mic jack. That’s a killer. The AUDIO is actually more important than the video quality — and you can get really good quality audio with a $20 external mic and a cheap camera.. but no matter how good the video looks, if it sounds really bad, people won’t watch it.

Hi Adele – in these videos, I’m just speaking off the cuff. I don’t have any script or bullet points. I usually try to avoid scripts when it’s content I know well and I’m just trying to have a conversation. I have used scripts and bullet point lists before, but usually only when I’m doing longer videos where I need to make sure I’m going to stay on track and not forget what I need to say. I totally agree, you want to be as natural as possible. But even when you do use a script, it can seem pretty natural – it’s all a matter of practice. If you watch Eben’s videos about money that I’ve emailed about recently, he’s reading word for word from a script, but it’s not obvious because Eben’s gotten really good and using a script but remaining pretty natural in the delivery.

Ultimately it comes down to getting really clear on what your prospects are looking for .. building it .. and then letting them know you have it with language that resonates and attracts their interest and trust!

What kind of lavalier microphone are you using? Ambient noise sets professionals apart from amateurs. To charge for product, I feel that high production value is owed to the client.

That said, I know I’ve been holding back because I was a film school grad who couldn’t work with 35mm film. Today’s tech advancements are equalizers, we no longer have any excuses for not creating great information product. Thank you for the inspiration!

Hi Rebecca — you’re right, audio has a BIGGER impact on the quality of the video that the video quality itself. In this video I’m using a Sennheiser wireless which is pretty high end, but a GREAT mic to use is the Audio Technica lav mic you can buy on Amazon for about $20. It has a 20 foot cord on it and is really good quality – that’s the cheapest and best solution, hands down.

Though very creative and considered by most highly intelligent, the whole world of internet marketing has left me overwhelmed. I want to spend my time and energy on what it is I want to share. That sounds frustrating. I personally use Jing and like it a lot. I hope you aren’t turned off by it by now…

Sometimes services like this just want a generic email address, not one that has your website name in it (example: irene@yourwebsitename.com).

I would recommend you set up a free email address just for the videos you create with your Jing account. Like a gmail.com, live.com, hotmail.com, or yahoo.com account. Jing should have no problem letting you register with one of these.

Hopefully, we’ll learn how to embed one of these videos on a website or blog,(You-Tube, too, if that’s required???!) in the next video. It’s probably one of those things that’s so easy for you, you can’t imagine there are people like me who don’t have a clue (technically challenged, yet strangely fascinated – possibly even addicted) to learning info marketing and all the other opportunities the Internet provides.

My next gap in knowledge (after I follow your instructions to make videos) is how to embed an audio that visitors can click on to listen to. Amazingly,and hard for me to believe, I just now realized that when I become competent in these two skills that have been causing so much anxiety — I’ll be completely equipped to move onward and forward. WOW! Almost there . . . and it’s only taken (I can’t bring myself to admit how many) years and dollars to learn.

All of this will equip me to help the small businesses in my area with their online marketing, as well as carry out plans for informational websites!

I watched the video before this, too, and saw myself in it and in the comments left by other viewers . . . my moods seem to change back and forth from “I have a service that will add value, and I’m SO excited to get started”, to “Who am I, anyway, and who’s going to want to listen to me”?, and “Everyone probably already knows all the things I’ve learned, and will likely be bored with my presentation and unlikely to want to pay for my services.” Well, I’ve invested too much now, there’s simply no turning back!

Yikes! Sometimes it’s a disheartening to learn you’re “normal”, after all.

Hi Greg, this is great! I appreciate the way you boil it down. In your video you’ve clearly got a web cam of some sort so that you can capture yourself speaking. This wasn’t really addressed but I’m presuming that a basic webcam would work here. Will the webcam work with Jing and Power point? How does a person combine a video of themselves speaking with the Power point slides?

You don’t actually need a webcam, only a microphone. Jing captures your screen and that becomes the video.

Greg, this was or course fine, but the next step is the hard one… embedding it in a page. The default jing player looks crappy, so I want something nicer, but Jing doesn’t enable that.I’d like the video to start automatically, but Jing doesn’t support that. I could put it on YouTube and use that player, but I don’t want it on youTube. So there’s a bit of a hurdle for me.

It’s a free piece of software so obviously you won’t get everything you want. If you want more control, use Camtasia and you can save it out and load to Youtube.

You would need to have a camera on which you can record the live components, and then be able to edit them on your computer. There is definitely more to doing live video shooting than screen capture, so that’s why I showed how to use Jing and do screen capture.

Thanks for the video! I’m brand spankin’ new to this site (recommended by my husband), and am excited to learn how I can develop and grow my Interior Design business.

I obtained a degree in Interior Design a few years ago and started my own business, while raising my two children. I am looking to find a way to bring in a more steady stream of income as so far, it has proven to be either crazy-busy or a down-right drought.
